Basic ADI Eligibility Requirements
DVSA decides whether an applicant is eligible and suitable to join the register. These are key starting requirements for becoming an approved driving instructor in Great Britain.
Age 21 or Over
You must be at least 21 years old when applying to become an approved driving instructor.
Licence Held for 3 Years
You normally need a full UK or EU driving licence held for at least three years.
Driving Record Check
You must not have been disqualified from driving during the previous four years.
New DBS Check
A new criminal record check is required for the ADI application, even if you already have another DBS certificate.

How to Become an Approved Driving Instructor
After DVSA accepts your application, the qualification has three tests. Your training plan should prepare you for both the assessment standard and the responsibility of teaching real learners.

How long does it take to become a driving instructor?
There is no single guaranteed timeframe. It depends on your starting standard, training frequency, test availability and whether you pass each stage. After passing Part 1, you must complete the qualification within the applicable two-year window.
Do I need previous teaching experience?
No. Training develops the communication, lesson-planning, coaching and risk-management skills needed to teach learners safely and effectively.
How much does instructor training cost?
Training costs depend on the package, number of sessions and support required. DVSA test, registration and trainee-licence fees are separate and may change, so check GOV.UK and request a written training quotation.
Can I work part-time as a driving instructor?
Yes. Many instructors choose a part-time schedule. Your hours should still allow enough preparation, learner continuity and time to maintain professional standards.
Can I teach for payment before I am fully qualified?
Only registered ADIs and eligible trainees holding a valid trainee driving instructor licence can legally charge for instruction. A trainee licence can be considered after passing ADI Part 2 and is subject to DVSA rules.
